This is the most interesting site I have
seen about Hays in a century. I graduated
from Fort Hays in 1966. I am a retired
Accounting Professor from San Francisco
State. I lived in Hays from 1950 to 1966.
It is exciting just seeing the pictures.
You people have it all there believe me.

"Great Plains University" has a nice ring to it. ;)

I prefer the status quo, though.

Ron,

Hello! I had no idea that you had responded to Paul's March essay on the Internet here. I should check your site more frequently!

Your comment above that the critics of mainstream media still "share a deep and sincere respect for the critical importance of journalism in our democracy," reminds me that this is a refrain we hear almost as often as "information overload." I think that we've all had a tendency to repeat that refrain. Perhaps we should go further back into our history and ask ourselves when exactly we decided that journalism as a profession was a necessity.

The importance of "journalism" as a profession or even as a requirement for healthy democracy - I think is a contemporary idea, not one necessarily rooted in the founding of our country. When Tom Paine distributed his pamphlets, he did so without concern for profit, revenue or advertising (he died penniless in obscurity). He was not a journalist, nor was he trained or degreed in journalism school.

When the 1st Amendment was written, it was phrased as "freedom of the press" which I believe referred to Tom Paine's legacy of using a personal printing press in the back room of his home.

Paine's activity on his personal printing press seems much more similar to what I am doing at this very moment as I am leaving comments on your site. The mass publication of "for profit" newspapers, in my opinion, does not as nearly embody Paine's spirit or the spirit of the 1st amendment. For more on that, you might see my description of how Paine inspired my creation of the EverydayCitizen.com site here.
